What has the church of today not seen?
Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in my house, and prove me now says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven, and pour out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive. This is the Old testament description of giving.
Tithing, whether under the law or not, CHANGED when the new testament was enacted at the resurrection of Jesus Christ. At the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the gentiles were admitted unprecedented access to a relationship with God. The curtain in the temple (House Of God) was torn open. That is what Malachi 1:11 is referring to. Same book everyone quotes to present the tithe. This is a prophetic insight into the New Testament version of the Tithe.
1. The storehouse has changed (temple of Jews to everyone, everywhere)
2. The people have changed. (Jews to everyone, everywhere)
3. The time of worship has changed. (from rising of the sun until the setting)
4. From tithe to Pure Offering.
The following is the New Testament prophecy about the tithe . Same Old Testament book.
For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the gentiles, saith the Lord of hosts.
This is what the Church of Today has NOT seen.
1. In every place...
2. God will be praised by the gentiles as well...
3. Praise at any time...
4. Now it is called a pure offering...
shouting, “Fellow Israelite s, help us! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people and our law and this place. And besides, he has brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this holy place.”
Never thought of this that way? Your not alone. This is the main reason the Apostle Paul was persecuted.
Paul was persecuted because he would not follow their traditions about the temple, the people, the worship and the law(tithe). He was telling the Gentiles you are now grafted in by faith, the Israelite are no longer God's chosen people and that the Temple in Jerusalem is no longer the place you have to go to fellowship. It is no longer limited to the Jews. Your worship is acceptable whenever you offer it and your offering is under your control.
Does tithing or giving somehow bring you into right standing with God?
“Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.
I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’ Still not justified
Does Tithe or offerings buy the blessing of God?
Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole." He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
What is the Tithe(offering) for?
In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ”
How do I as a believer handle the tithe/offering?
1 CORINTHIANS 16:2
On the first day of every week each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with your income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made(set up a separate bank account just for giving).
What am I to store it up for?
Verse one says Now about the collection for the Lord's people: Do what I told the Galatians churches to do.
Share with each other!
What amount should I give?
2 CORINTHIANS 9:7
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, Not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Am I responsible in any other way with my tithe/offering?
Jesus replied (to the Pharisees) And why do you break the command of God (ten commandments) for the sake of your tradition? For God said, "Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.' But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used (tithe money)to help their father or mother is 'devoted to God,' they are not to 'honor their father or mother' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
Jesus is placing caring for ones parents before tithing/offerings to the established Temple where they attended.
1. Set aside money into a separate account 1 Cor 16:2
2. Pray about the amount to set aside. Stay in agreement with your spouse 2Cor 9:7
3. Take care of your extended family that has needs. Mat 15:3-6
4. Pray about what to do with the additional funds. 2 Cor 9:7
5. Support the body of Christ as long as they are helping the needy and are focused on missions. Especially if they care for widows and orphans in their distress.
6. Give to those you see in need. Forget the tax exemption it is only a trap to stop you. 2 Cor 9:7
People who are following this scriptural giving can expect to experience cheerful giving. Some are finding that staying with percentages makes this easier.
For example, one brother in the Lord found that He decided to still give ten percent to the church however only if they dedicate 1/3 to the poor then 1/3 to missions. the remaining 1/3 is for church administration.
I asked Him if He found a church that follows that scriptural handling of the offering. He said, " he had not," so here is how he handled His Offering. He said," I am giving 1/3 of my offering to the church." His reasoning was that the church was using ALL the offering for administration and nothing for the widow or orphan and no budget for missions or outreach.
He wants to be faithful to God. He does not confuse faithfulness to a local church as faithfulness to God. They are not the same. He helps the local church but uses the rest of the funds for the poor, widows, orphans, missions and outreach. He knows one day He will answer to God for his giving. He is aware he will stand alone and does not plan on making excuses for His actions or inaction.
You may find that your church of fellowship is supporting all 3 areas. If the Lord leads, get behind them.
